::History::
In 1973, the National Commission on Education began efforts to increase the number of minority students entering the field of engineering. Several educational institutions, corporations, and not-for-profit organizations took on the challenge of developing programs that identified, prepared, and encouraged underrepresented minority students to enter Engineering careers. In 1978 Indiana Bell Telephone Company, now AT&T started working with eighth grade students to prepare them for careers in engineering. In 1986, they expanded the program. They solicited participation from other corporations. From this beginning, the Minority Engineering Program of Indianapolis (MEPI) has expanded to include grades six thru twelve. There are an average of twenty-five students in each grade level.
MEPI began its quest to attract, educate and produce quality students in the field of engineering and information technology. Since the program's inception, MEPI has graduated over 350 students. Of those students, ninety percent have gone to college. Many are majoring in technology related fields.
