Our History

The Minority Engineering Program of Indianapolis (MEPI) was established  in 1986 with a goal to expose minority students within our community to key concepts related to STEM Careers. Students are encouraged to excel in their studies while placing emphasis on Math and Science.  MEPI’s concentrated programs provide a strong foundation for minority students who plan to enter into the Engineering or Information Technology fields.

Our Mission

The Minority Engineering Program of Indianapolis increases student knowledge, interest, and engagement related to STEM studies and professional fields; with an emphasis on engineering and information technology.

What we do

The goal of MEPI is to expose minority students, at an early age, to  the career opportunities available in engineering and information technology (IT). Students are encouraged to excel in their studies while placing emphasis on Math, Science, and English.  MEPI’s concentrated programs provide a good foundation for minority students who plan to enter the field of Engineering or Information Technology.  This action will expand the pool of talent from which Indianapolis area corporations will be able to select candidates.

President’s Message

Greetings from the Minority Engineering Program of Indianapolis (MEPI) family,

I hope everyone is staying safe and following the appropriate guidelines in light of the COVID-19
pandemic. We continued our programming for the 2020-2021 program year virtually and had a
very successful year. Our Programs Committee and facilitators worked to complete the update
for the programming for all grades with the intent to continue to deliver STEM mentoring and
coaching sessions as strong and relevant as ever. Our program volunteers continue to be the
life blood of developing the youth in our community.

In June, we held our Annual Banquet virtually where we heard from many student speakers and
honored our graduating high school seniors. I’m proud to say we had very impressive students
that are pursuing their post-secondary education dreams. We were able to provide three
William R. Johnson scholarships to eligible students. Our educational partner, Indiana University
Purdue University—Indianapolis (IUPUI), provided for a second time a $2,000 four-year
renewable scholarship to one deserving MEPI senior. Allegion, MEPI Corporate Sponsor,
provided a $10,000 scholarship to a very deserving graduating senior. Another MEPI Corporate
Sponsor, Cummins, provided one student with a $2,000 scholarship and another with a $1,000
scholarship. Sheldon Day, former MEPI student and current Defensive End for the Cleveland
Browns, spoke to all the students and gave three $500 scholarships to graduating seniors. We
appreciate everyone above who helped make this happen.

Financially we continue to be in a position that will allow us to continue to serve the youth of
Indianapolis for years to come. Our fundraising and sponsorship committee were able to
expand the number of corporate sponsors with our newest sponsors being Elanco, Roche, and
SerVaas Laboratories. With more corporate sponsors we are able facilitate expanding our
programming to reach many more students.

We continue to expand our recruiting efforts to enroll more financially disadvantaged students.
This will allow us to extend our impact in the metropolitan Indianapolis area. The Minority
Engineering Program of Indianapolis will continue to implement new programming that will
ensure we are aligned with today’s STEM curriculum and industry needs.
Finally, I want to thank all of our Corporate and Educational sponsors for their continued
support in helping us develop future STEM professionals.
